The 9/11 Commission Report: Searching for New Strategies

7/21/04: With the release of the 9/11 Commission’s findings on Thursday, July 21st, a new chapter will open in the U.S. security field. The attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 may be the most spectacular and devastating event to convey the true end of the Cold-War and the beginning of a new age - one focused on ethereal “security threats” and murky predictions.

Reagan's Committment

6/7/04: Around the world people are reflecting on the life and political legacy of Ronald Reagan. This reflection comes over 15 years after he left power and is thus focused on the bigger events of his life. Doing so brings our attention to his successes as a leader or "sponsor" -- the term this Institute uses in referring to the legitimizing strength of an authority behind a deliberate agenda -- of change.

Paradigms and the 9/11 Commission

6/4/04: Is America's 9/11 Commission looking into the right questions and issues? Knowing only what is reported in the public media, it's hard to conclude that they are. The commissioners and staff appear to be doing a reasonable "industrial age" review of processes. But is that enough?

Transforming US Embarrassments at Abu Ghraib Into Positive Lessons

5/17/04: A few things about leading complex change are predictable. The main one is that unpredictable things will happen.
When they do, a leader of change will do one of two things: Get knocked off his or her plan and let the change initiative falter; or find a way to “reframe” the unpredictable event so it helps to reach the change objective.

READER RESPONSE 5/26/04: In response to Mr. Climer's "Transforming U.S. Embarrassments...," I don't disagree with his specific tactical suggestion but I do take issue with the implied/inferred expected results.
